The Residential Sprinkler systems

Residential sprinklers are devices that are installed in a home to attack a fire in its early stages by spraying enough water to put out the fire or keep it from spreading. Sprinkler heads operate quickly to minimize the threat from heat, flames and toxic smoke.

Each sprinkler head acts independently of the others. Many are hooked directly to your waterline and require very minimal water pressure.

There are several types of residential sprinklers to fit new or older homes. A single sprinkler head releases 13-14 gallons of water per minute on a fire. Compare that amount to a fire hose releasing 125-500 gallons of water per minute.

A Pendents sprinkler is installed in the ceiling and sprays water in a circular pattern. A Sidewall sprinkler is installed in a wall 4" to 6" down from the ceiling and sprays water in a half moon shape.

Between 75% and 90% of all residential fire deaths could havare e been prevented by the use of a smoke detector and residential sprinkler combination.

What About Water Damage?

Once a fire begins, only one or two sprinklers near the fire activate and discharge water. Residential sprinklers discharge water at a low rate, so your home will not be flooded. (Flooding is not a danger with sprinklers in commercial buildings either.) After the fire is out, the supply valve can be simply shut off - but never do this yourself. Always call the fire department and let the professionals determine when it is safe to shut off the water.
