Fire Safety Advisor | Fire prevention information

It is not important whether you are at school, work, or home, you must be prepared in the case of  fire.  Make sure the people around you are prepared as well.

Fire and older adults

The risk of death from fire for adults aged  65 and over is twice greater than the risk for adults under  65, and hospital stays of more than 40 days are common for older burn victims. consequently  older people need to be especially careful with fire.  One of the main causes of fires is by falling asleep smoking especially after drinking alcohol or taking medication of any kind. Leaving burning candles unattended Ashtrays emptied before smoldering materials are completely out also start a number of fires in homes of smokers.  the other major cause is careless cooking with older people as pots can be left on the gas without water in or they can forget that they had something on the gas and leave the house.

It is highly recommended to have at least 1 fire extinguisher in your house in a place that is easy to get to in case of flames in the home.

First of all design an escape plan in case of a fire, in your home, check all the possible exits in your house to see which is the best one in case of an emergency.

What to do in case of a fire

Some tips that might help you in case of fire :

The first thing to do if possible is to call the fire deparment and try to get to any fire protection equipment you may have on the premises, this may save lives.

When you are in the midst of a fire you must think fast about the shortest way out, first see if your windows are breakable, or open, if they are the closest way out  and you are on the ground floor go through them, otherwise go through the shortest way out through doors, also if there other people with you, you must stay together and decide the quickest route.

What if all escape routes are blocked by fire?
Try calling 911 for help, and shout loudly for help, preferrably through the window.

You are very frightened
Don't  panic, it is legitimate to be afraid, but never go and hide under the bed or in the closet, it will not solve the problem, you must  find your way out, and let people to see you, the fire team might see you and rescue you, but not if you are hiding.

Check your clothes, if they are 'fire catchers'
Your clothes can catch fire just by standing to close to a candle, if you are in this situation and your cloths are on fire, don't start running and screaming, stop at once, get on the ground, cover you face with your hands, and roll from side to side. This will cut the fire off.

If you see smoke or flames in your house, and you realise that it is  time to go out before the fire spreads all over the house, make your way to the exit, stay low as possible to the ground, because in most cases of fire people are hurt more from smoke and poisonous fumes than the the fire itself . On the ground there is less smoke because smoke rises up and the possibilities to see are better low down.Go through a door that leads to the outside of the house.
